
Library was built by Consul Tiberius Julius Aquila in 114 AD in his father’s honour after the death of governor. His father Celcus Polemaeanus was Roman Governor of Asia Minor in 2nd century AD. According to the sources there was more than 12000 scrolls in niches around the wall. And there was 1 meter gap between inner and outer wall to keep th ebooks from the humidity.
On the facade there are statues representing Virtues:
Arete – Goodness
Ennoia – Thought
Episteme – Knowledge
Sophia – Wisdom.
Original statues are in Ephesus Museum of Vienna.
